Its a garbage disposer and yes it grinds up stuff. An aerator is the thingie on the end of the tap that makes the water all bubbly

Aerator. And actually it doesn't grind but rather knocks the food around so rapidly that it makes it smaller. If it actually grinded it would get clogged and broken all the time. Traditionally people think it is a garbage disposal, which is actually wrong. be well.
