$8trillion is the result of the S&L scam by the bush family during the reagan years.
The rest is from diverting 75% of your tax dollar to profiteers. Get rid of those two items and we wouldn't have the $26trillion that OMB quotes (does not agree at all with whitehouse figures which use creative bookkeeping, kind of goes with "alternative interrogation" dontcha think?).

The deficit has existed for nearly a half century, so it's not the War in Iraq. Clinton's smoke and mirrors "balanced budget" only existed briefly when the Social Security $ were added, even though they are a separate category.
Social spending and the "entitlement" mentality of the society along with politicians who are too happy to keep spending other's money.
Medicare, welfare, subsidies, illegal immigration, etc. are the bulk of the wasted $, not Military spending as so many liberals would have you believe. I have compassion and wish every tax paying citizen in America could live in a Mansion, live to be a healthy 150, and drive their dream car, but the reality is that we have to draw the line somewhere.
Here's a little challenge for those who are brave enough: run a search on the "balanced budget amendment" and find out who keeps voting it down. Hint: it's not the Republicans.
"Line item veto" was another great example of liberals using the courts to over turn the will of the people, Congress, and the (very reluctant) President who signed it.
Two questions to ask those who love to complain:
1. Did you vote in the last election?
2. Did you vote for someone other than the incumbent?
Keep voting in the same people and guess what?
BTW, the top 50 % income bracket of tax payers are paying OVER 96 % of the tax bill. The top 1 % are paying 34.27 %. Both the actual dollar amount and percent of tax revenue paid on the highest earners has INCREASED under GWB, so it's time to grow up and stop believing all the LIBERAL lies about tax cuts for the rich.
It's like two of us both buying the same Coke at a ball game. Because of my income, I get charged $10 and the lower income guy next to me gets charged $1. I pay with a $100 bill, he pays with a $5 bill, and then complains when the change is handed back that it's unfair because I got a huge refund.

Because it spends more than it takes in. The US can only raise a certain amount of money through taxation, then it has to borrow money from other countries, or owe money to suppliers. Some of their expenses have been HUGE -- space missions, for example, and anytime a war is involved, the costs skyrocket. So they end up owing money and this results in a deficit in the economy.
It's just the same as if you ran up debts and couldn't pay them, you would have a deficit in your budget. Only the US does it on a larger scale.

Because we are spending almost 2 billion per WEEK on the war in Iraq. Because this government refuses to tax the rich and only the middle class has the burden of supporting everything. We owe the Chinese trillions. Our kids and grandkids will pay dearly for George Bush's mistakes.

Because we loan money out to other nations who, conveniently, can't pay us back. Oh, and that little thing in Iraq.
