It was Iraq. However, I voted mainly for Republicans. Saddam and Osama are happy that the Democrats won. Doesn't that scare anyone? It scares me.

All three, but most particularly the war and the scandals, according to exit polls. The US has woken up to the fact that the Iraqi occupation is a fiasco, and the numerous scandals associated with the Republicans has really angered the voters.
I think, also, it's just that there's only so much bad news you can take before you reach the breaking point. The economy is not good, the housing bubble is threatening to burst, gas prices are still astronomical compared to pre-Bush prices, we constantly have new reports about how we're less safe now, the warnings about the environment are getting more and more dire every day, and it seems like each week brings a new scandal and a new, horrifyingly high death toll from Iraq. I think people are just sick of it and want a change. I hope to god that the Dems can manage something.

There is entirely too much debt being paid by the average citizen...Credit card companies are running wild with their 30% interest rates and late fees...There needs to be a cap on the amount any one can charge for interest rates. Inventory is not moving in the factories and large companies, Ford motor Company, etc., are laying people off from work.
If the Republicans intend on getting control of the Congress in the future and keeping the White House, the Republican Party better start listening to the people and not brow beat them into believing anything that just isn't true.
Begin bringing the troops home from Iraq, get the economy moving, loose the religious right attitude, address the issue of health care and the method of delivering the quality health care and medications needed, in essence, listen to the people.
To the Republican Party....SHUT THE HELL UP AND LISTEN!

Boy, some of these republicans are really burrying their heads in the sand and not looking at what they have helped create.
Americans have tested Bush's propaganda and found it to be what it is; lies and trash. Perhaps at first we believed much of the reterick, but over the course of the last few years Bush's abuse of the American people has became all to evident. And that he still just doesn't understand that you can't be abusive and then be found valuable is pretty telling.
...Seen the corruption and crooked Congress Men and Women look the other way;
We have watched Katrina happen before our eye's while bUsh looked the other way,
Watched the middle and lower classes suffer and be mocked,
Sat while being walked on and spitted on by a group of people that consider themselves elite,
Sat while we were told we were not patriotic if we did not march along to what we were bright enough to spot as lies,
Sat while being told to get out of our country,
Watched the perversion of the evangelicals that legislate suffering while they partake,
The torture of any human being Bush or Rumsfield pointed a finger at,
The creation of further terrorist's,
Watched while our military shredded another country on false pretext,
On and on.
Most Americans are wiser today and could not wait to get to the voting booths to say so. Bush and this Republican party are first of all corrupt, secondly greedy, third willful violators of the rights of other Americans different them. We have learned they are ugly, Neo-fascist, cold and just plain can't handle responsibility to their fellow man like the Democrats have shown they can.
Good riddens!

I think for each State the issue was different. Virginia I think it was percieved corruption and racism...In Connetticut it was a refereundum on George Bush. (Lincoln Chaffe) The sneator who lost ,had a 61% approval rating. In other states it was Abrammof and corruption, smome House races it seemed like the war.
The voters had such a mixed bag of failures to choose from. From Iraq to Foley and Abrammof and Delay tying the party to corruption to not getting anything resolved or having much to show for there 6 years in power...Democrats will hopefully learn from this...If not it could be them next election...

The war was big, the scandals in the Congress added fuel to the fire, and the public was growing more and more discontent as the President appeared to ignore basic facts about how things are going these days. Remember, he didn't win a landslide victory in 2004 (or 2000, for that matter) and yet he huffed and puffed about having "a mandate". Don't ever ask him to read your tea leaves!

I believe that the main reason why the Democrats won big in this election was because of the publics' discontent over the Iraq war, and perhaps, also because of the scandals.

Corruption and Iraq. The sad thing is the Democrats didn't win the election. The Republicans lost it.

Democrats ran primarily on a platform of economic reform and changes in the war on terror. Americans responded positively to both (for example, Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, and Ohio all passed initiatives to raise the minimum wage - every state that had it on the ballot).

I think the biggest reason would probably be the War in Iraq and domestic policy. Apparently Americans just thinks it's time for a change.

No. we are able to pop out in checklist numbers in 2014 to place the homestead back into the palms of the Democrats. for the reason that's the only way that Congress would be waiting to get something carried out. adequate of those meaningless witch hunts. that's a waste of time and funds.
