In a Bee Hive, The Queen Bee is the only female Bee able to reproduce. When the young hatch as adult Bees from the honeycomb, into which the eggs are layed if one or more Queen Bees are born, they fight the mother Queen until the death and until only one is left.

The real purpose of a queen bee is propagation. She is the one who lays eggs. All the worker bees do is build the hive and feed the queen. When it comes time for the hive to swarm and find new homes, or when the queen bee dies, several queens are created, and they battle it out among themselves to see which one will become the new queen.
Interestingly enough, workers can create queens from ordinary eggs according to what they are fed.
