The media was supposed to be the watchdog of the nation... as it stands its kind of hard to tell if its does its job or not... sometimes this is highly discouraged in various ways by the powers that be.
Of course the media purposefully attempts to manipulate the way Americans think and behave. But then again you could say the same thing about someone telling their kid to stay in school and not to do drugs.
I would be more concerned with to what end (why) the media manipulates the public on any particular issue than worrying about whether or not it does so because that part is just a given...

Yes, it has unglued this country in a big way. People just don't realize who actually runs the media and how it is used to manipulate people. Even when it's proved over and over how stories have been created to sway an opinion the people still hold unto everyword! The liberals own the media. They say 75% of the media is liberals and Democrats. I think people are getting away from newspapers and news magazines.
