This site lists the best colleges and universities as ranked by U.S. News & World Reports magazine. There are several categories:

National universities (these offer doctoral programs and are nationally known)
Master's universities (these are categorized according to the region of the U.S. they are located in)
Liberal Arts Colleges
Comprehensive Colleges (these offer more majors such as Nursing that lead to a specialized career than the liberal arts colleges)
Business Programs
Engineering Programs

Just because an institution is not listed does not mean that it is not a good college or university, but these are the ones that are the most stable financially, have the best faculty, are ranked highest by their peer institutions, etc.
