He was hit by a drunk driver, but that was the second time. The first time was in the height of his football career,in the centre of the movie, just when the Titans had gelled as a unit and were starting to win. That accident left him paralysed from the waist down. He still competed with spirit, in whatever he did in his life afterward for however long or short that was.The funeral served as a premise to gather together...and remember the titans.

Because he was killed in a wreck by a drunk driver. What a waste of a Great Life! The drunk lived and the best guy dies, sad story, and probably why they made the movie!

Well, he was injured in a car accident and that left him paralyzed, right? I think he just died of complications of paralysis. Heart failure or something. Look it up on IMDb. They're the people you really want to quiz about this stuff.
