to un-curse all the pirates, they needed to pay a blood price. barbossa mentioned that all of them spilled some blood to pay back was was taken, unfortunately before they knew about the curse, bill turner had sent his son one gold piece and he had been sent to his "death" by being tied to a steel ball and tossed overboard (the crew didn't know yet that they couldn't be killed yet, which is why in the second film, he told his son that he had joined davey jones' crew. the alternative would have been to be at the bottom of the ocean, cold and alone... and not being able to die).

to pay the undue the curse they needed to return *every single piece of cursed gold* AND everyone who had taken a gold piece would have to pay in blood... since they had sent "bootstrap" bill turner to the bottom of the ocean... they needed someone who carried his blood to pay the price... they needed his kin, his blood... his child.

that was why they kidnapped Elizabeth, because they thought she was turners kid. and they needed the last piece and a bit of her blood to turn back the curse. when jack sparrow (sorry, i mean Captain jack sparrow) took on of the gold pieces, the curse needed HIS blood in addition to turners to undo the curse. so at the last moment, he cut his hand (to pay his part of the blood payment) and then tossed the coin to turner who was bleeding and had already spilled some of it on the cursed gold.

when turner dropped the gold piece into the chest all who had taken the gold had returned it and the blood payment had been given. the curse had been lifted, and THAT is why when the bullet struck Barbossa, it actually killed him instead of just annoy him...

Because everyone who had taken the gold had to pay with blood. Even though Jack wasn't part of the original crew who stole the gold, he did take it earlier in the cave in order to gain him those cool immortal fight scenes. Although he only stole the gold for a few minutes, he still had to give some blood back in order to break the curse.

jack didn't cut his hand...did he? Will cut his hand, i know that for sure! but i don't remember if jack cuts his hand! but i'm guessing that whenever someone takes a piece of gold from the chest, they have to use their own blood to break the curse. it makes sense!
