Swap your black and white wires.

Normally when a light switch is wired the neutral wire(white one) is just wired together and not to the switch itself you will need to add these white wires to the silver side of the receptacle the gold side is for the black wire (power and the gold wire is the ground. Unless you have a three way switch then u have 4 wires to deal with . and the red would be extra.

A switch is connected to the "hot" wire of the circuit. An outlet needs a hot (black) and neutral (white), there should also be a bare ground wire for proper connection. The switch was put there to control something. If that something is gone, and there is a neutral (white) wire present, you could accomplish the outlet hook-up by cutting the white wire and pigtail another wire to the neutral side of the outlet... maybe you should call an electrician.

like lenml said, a light switch has one wire that comes from the light fixture to the switch and back to the power source. it,s just a circut breaker. an outlet needs a hot on one side and a neutral on the other side

The light switch is only ONE leg of the Alternating Current (A/C) circuit.

you cannot replace a SWITCH with a SOCKET. You'd better consult with a local electrician before you burn something down, or take a serious shock.
