if you have to buy new ones but this year put them away properly and you wont have this problem next year, take a coke bottle (empty) and wrap each strand of lights around the bottle, 1 strand per bottle I do that every year and have no trouble with tangled lights

YES! I also hate it when half the string doesn't work the next year. Me and the lights have a fight each year when I try to put them up outside. Really, we should just buy new lights every year. They're just a couple bucks!

My friend has some frame thingies that you use to wrap your lights up each year so they don't tangle as easily. Maybe you should get some of those?

Yeah, I have a tendency to do the same thing. Luckily I have never broken my lights though. However, I put each strand in a seperate box and that really helps. If I don't have the box, then I roll the lights onto a paper towel roll and they don't get as tangled.

I would spray them with lighter fluid and set them on fire. C'mon! I know it's Responsible to use the same string each year, but is 20 or 30 bucks too much to spend each year on a clean, well organized new string of lights? Throw the crap away, make your kids untangle it, or go buy some new lights.

I'm not going to get angry over something like christmas lights. I just pitch them and go buy more. Good for the economy.

That's hilarious!
In my house, if the tree manages to get set up and is straight (not leaning)....then so far so good.

Now to disentangle and check the lights before attempting to put them on the tree in an organized and well balanced way. At that point.....there are usually threats of divorce and "why are you stupid", remarks coming out of mine and my husband's mouths.

Eventually....the spirit of the season returns and all is well once again. Somehow the tree becomes, well lit and nicely decorated. We sit down and look at our beautiful tree......and one string of lights blinks out. The screaming begins again...."I told you not to use those lights".!!!!!! LMAO!
