The Oxford dictionary of English Etymology traces the word horse to old Frieien (a language of Friesland, Northern Netherlands), hors, hers, or hars. Spelling was not standaredised until recently. Also Middle High German (which is a later language), has the word ros ors, which comes form the veryt old common Germanic words xorsam, and xorsaz. phylologists cannot trace it back earlier than that.
Carnivore comes Latin from the word carn whuch means flesh. Many languages adopted this word root. e.g "chile con carne.". Which is Spanish for meat chile.

Well, in my best opinion those are root words. They can not stand alone.
Now words such with prefixes and suffixes often have root words, but for the ones you mentioned I don't get the gist of it.
I mean like the word or is in horse, but that changes the entire word.

Well, the root for Carnivore is carn-, which means "flesh" or "meat", but I don't think "Horse" has a root, but if it did, it would have to be "hor".
