My 3 year old fidgeted with it while she was watching a movie and now the sound is completely gone. Is there something I can do on my own to fix it, or where can I take it?

My 3 year old did something to it and now the sound is completely gone. I have tried the control panel sound thing and all, but none of it works. Everything is set at the highest volume right now. It's a Dell Inspiron 1150, if that helps at all.

What operating system?

Check the basics first - make sure the volume is turned up and not muted. (there should be function (FN) keys for both of those on the keyboard) Also check them in the operating system. (start, settings, control panel, sounds). It could very easily be something as simple as this.

check the device manager (start, settings, control panel, system, hardware, device manager) and see if you have any yellow ! points. Check sounds there and see if you see a sound driver installed. It almost never hurts to reinstall the drivers if you have anything there that doesn't look right.

If it's not and you need to reinstall the drivers - you can find them here:
Dell Inspirion Audio Drivers for Inspirion 1150 for Windows XP and Windows 2000:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R90698&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_1150&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2551&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=5&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=118248

Download the drivers and reinstall them. If the file just extracts to your hard drive you'll have to manually install them. I'm sure instructions are available online on how to install drivers - but if you can't find them - hit me up and i'll walk you through it.

If you're running a different operating system go to:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?

and put in your information and download the latest drivers for your laptop.

Also double check your BIOS also (enter setup at boot) and make sure that sound is still enabled.

Good luck!

Well assuming that you were just watching a movie when he hit something, it shouldn't be a driver or anything major. Check the connection in the back, maybe it came lose. Also, in the taskbar, there should be a speaker, click on that. If its muted, unmute it. Also the sound could be turned down in the same place, right above the mute button.

But if for some reason the drivers mysteriously got deleted, you'll have to find the cd that came with your speakers and load them. If you didn't get one, go to the website of the speakers and download the driver there.

just go to control panel Sounds>Sounds and turn it up if it still doesn't work then right click the speaker icon in the tray on the right if it isint showing then click the arrow and find the speaker icon if still not there then go back to control panel Sounds>Sounds and find the option to show speaker in tray then right click it and click on the "open volume control" from there wave slider and turn that up a little and your sound should be fine (if your movies r not turning up then u should turn your "cd/video in" up and that will fix that)
