America's conversion to metric is the law:http://ts.nist.gov/WeightsAndMeasures/Metric/pub814.cfm#act

It's just voluntary.

However, all the units you listed are metric. The prefixes you're confused about are metric prefixes.

In the UK we still measure our distances in Miles, quote our fuel economies in MPG, and weigh ourselves mostly in Pounds / Stones. The convertion to the Metric System is far from complete.

Look to the future. Computers don't work in decimal (32 bit, 64bit, 512 Mb RAM etc), why should anything else.

Whilst we still have 12 months in a year and 24 hours in a day there's hope for us all!

Never, we have many other things to deal with right now...oil, war, and the democrats taking over the house and senate. yikes, when will we have time to switch over to the metric system. I think man will be living on the moon before America decides to switch to metric. It's all good.

Americans have a hard time multiplying by 10. Their president believes the jury is still out on evolution so what does that say about the mentality of Americans? Maybe when they get invaded by China in about 50 years will they be forced into it.

Hopefully we'll never switch. Just because most of the world is metric doesn't make it a better system.

Stick to the imperial system Britain may have been forced into the metric system but we still think in miles per gallon and miles per hour, smoke tobacco in ounces, weigh ourselves in pounds and stones and measure our height in feet and inches.

Well done USA, but why the hell did you drive on the right, that was Napoleon's doing too.

Those who want metric only need to convert measurements to metric, it's as easy as that.

I think they are still rather hoping to convert the rest of the world back to imperial measurements, after they have completed their imperial ambitions to take over the rest of the world.
