It could mean a couple of things.
It could be part of your mucous plug. It could be from your cervix being irritated from sex.
Or, on a more serious note it could be placenta previa, where the placenta attaches to the cervix or very near. But, you most likely would have had bleeding much earlier if thats the case.

You should see a doctor or go to the hospital you are having your baby(ring them even). It could just be your mucus plug but it could be something like the placenta coming away from the uterus. This would be life threatning to you and your baby.
Your 40 weeks your baby is ready, please dont leave it. Better to be safe!

Its ok, you have probable lost your mucus plug.As you begin to get ready to go into labor you will lose this. It is a little scary but its normal. Call your doctor and tell them whats going on, if for no other reason to reasure your self. Good luck with you and your new baby!!!!!!

I would call and let the doctor or midwife know. Since you are so far along I am pretty sure it is from the cervix getting ready for the pending birth. Best wishes.

At 40 weeks it could be the onset of labor. Call you OB/GYN or local emergency room for advise.

If it was a one time thing I wouldn't worry about it, but I would mention it to your OB on your next visit.
