you mean like this?

i will be using the symbol ^ for "to the power of"
gcf (greatest common factor) of 6,8, and 12 is 2
break them down into prime numbers
6 = 2*3
8 = 2*2*2
12 = 2*2*3
the one they all have in common is 2, so that's the answer
3y^2, 24y^3
break them down into factors/prime numbers again
3y^2 = 3*y*y
24y^3 = 2*2*2*3*y*y*y
the one they both have in common is 3*y*y, so 3y^2 is the answer

6 8 12
3x2 2x4 2x3x2

the greatest common factor is two
it is the biggest number that goes into all the other numbers

3y2 is 3y to 2nd power
24y3 is 24y to 3rd power
y is the only thing they have in common Dr. J has a plain answer.

6 = 2*3
8 = 2*2*2
12 = 2*2*3
they have a same number of 2, so their GCF is 2
3y^2 = 3*y*y
24y^3=2*2*2*3*y*y*y
they have a same 3*y*y so their GCF is 3*y*y or 3y^2, you got it ?

Try downloading Math 911 - you can google search for it.

It has a thirty day free trial period and it is (apparently) very good. Good Luck.
