I have edited community newspapers and we always had a need for people who had some free time during the day to write up stories. The more available you are, especially at the last minute, the more work you get.

Keep in mind that every paper is different. Check with your local weekly to see if they need freelance writers and what qualifications you'd need. Find out what day is best to call (the day after deadline day) and check in periodically to see if there are stories they need written.

The pay will not be great but the flexibility may make up for it. Having "clips," or published stories to show an editor, gets your foot in the door and gives you credibility. You may have to offer to write for free at first but don't do that past the first story.

It helps to have some background in journalism, especially a degree or a class at a community college, but not always necessary. It is important to know the basics of how to avoid things like plagiarism, libel, etc. Make sure you keep your records, including handwritten notes, and attribute all quotes properly.

Most research (interviews) can be done on the phone. It helps if you have a recorder of some kind and can hook it to your phone. There sell these things at Radio Shack. Also if you have a camera you can make some extra money by taking photos, too. Of course, you'd have to leave home to do that but often you can hit three or four photo ops in a row in just an hour or so.

Just write clearly and accurately and don't try to be too cute. That's when I had problems understanding what the heck the writer was trying to say.

Don't turn down stories because you think the subject isn't interesting. It's your job to make it interesting. Just make sure the editor clearly explains what the scope of the story is. Even if the paper is a rag, keep your standards high and do a good job and eventually you can move up to writing for better papers and/or magazines.

Don't worry about having an immaculate house. I'm not a stay at home mom but personally I don't understand how some women keep their houses spotless. Their poor kids must have to stay in their rooms all the time or something. My house is only spotless on Saturday mornings - that's when I do my weekly cleaning. The rest of the week I do basic pickup and wipe down when I get home from work. I literally set a timer for 10 minutes and do nothing but clean. The 10 minutes a day keeps it from getting truly dirty but means I don't follow my daughter around all evening telling her to pick up her toys (actually she does that during the 10 minutes cleaning and it keeps them under control, if there's some on the floor when we go to bed so what, that's what the next days 10 minutes is for). If 10 minutes a couple times a day isn't enough time for you to get the house the way you want then my suggestion would be to advertise around the neighborhood for a mother's helper - a younger teenager who can entertain and take care of the kids for an hour or two while you clean house and do laundry.

Review your talents and go from there. I am a Realtor and mom to 6 kids. Being a Realtor allows me to make my own schedule, take my 4 year old with me to "work" and I make more money doing this than anything else I ever tried. Easy money once you get licensed which varies by state.
