This test is a screening test, meaning that a positive result places you in a higher risk group for having a baby with a problem, but does NOT diagnose a baby with such a problem. If the screening test is positive, other tests are recommended to check further. The most likely reason for an abnormal screening test is incorrect dating for the pregnancy. If you screen negative, it does not mean that you have no possibility of an affected baby, but does mean that you are at low risk: 1 in 1000 or less for neural tube defects, and less than a 35-year-old woman for Down Syndrome.

This is the reason I DIDN'T have the test done. There are a lot of errors in the test--they just don't have any more effective ones to give women. There are a lot of false positives given. Talk with your doctor and you can always try and do an amino test or do further ultrasound tests if you're really worried. But relax, stress isn't good for a pregnant lady. They can pick up some birth defects with both the tests that I mentioned. I hope that everything turns out the way you want it!

A positive AFP+ Quad Test means that you are in a higher risk group for having a baby with an open neural tube defect or a chromosome abnormality. However, it does not prove by itself that there is anything wrong with the pregnancy. In fact, only a small number of women with screen positive results will have an abnormal baby. If you have a “screen positive” result, you should consider specific counseling to discuss further testing.

Yes it is a screening for birth defects-especially downs syndrome.I actually am 25 weeks pregnant and refused the test because there can be false positives-a high rate actually-and I didn't want to get one and be worried the rest of my pregnancy. You will probably be required to have an amniocentesis done now where they stick a needle into the uterus and take a sample of anmionitic fluid and see if that comes back showing downs or spina bifida. That test is very accurate.

Don't worry yet. That test has a 25% false positive test, which is why I decided to not have it with either of my pregnancies. You will have a very detailed ultrasound which will reveal if there is really a problem. I wish you the best. That test is also supposed to be done between 16-18 weeks and is very timing sensitive. Having it done so late could have affected the results.

Same thing happened to me and my children are free from defects, but I too was scared when I got that Quad 4 panel come back as higher risk for birth defects. But if you research it, you will find out that that Quad can come back abnormal for a WHOLE host of reasons. Your estimated due date could be off and that alters it etc. Its really not a precise test. But feeding into the hoopla I got an amnio to be certain. It was fine now THAT's the test that tells but not recommended but hey, I was worried. Good Luck to you, email me if you wish

like the first responder said that test has high false positives which is why most health care providers don't even bother with it Just get a good ultrasound and go from there No need to worry about what might be it probably won't be...........all 3 of my kids so far were supposed to have birth defects but I haven't seen any sign of them yet....
