Microsoft has been an enormous benefit to the entire world, far in excess of the huge profits they've collected.

Start with its market cap. It's $287.4 billion. That's the market's assessment of current value of all of its expected future profits. Profit is a good estimate of the value a company creates. Profitable companies tend to create enough value to cover its costs. There are always exceptions, but it's still a good starting point.
You can monkey around with adjusting the market cap up or down based on certain factors. For example, if Bill is successful with any of his philanthopic venture, then that's a big plus - especially for the people who can avoid dying from AIDS.
You might adjust it down if you believe some external costs arise from the sell of Microsoft's products, perhaps Microsoft's dominant position stifles competition leaving customers with little choice. But I wouldn't. It's dominant because, by and large, it creates products that are more or less reliable, easy to use for the masses and well worth the price. Other companies just haven't been able to produce products on par with Microsoft. If Microsoft's products were substandard and there were no other choices I'd say adjust down. But, this isn't the case.

I don't tend to use MS software, other than their OSs, but I think that overall they have caused much more good than harm to the world economy.

They have swallowed up the market for various kinds of computers, made it hard on any competition, too costly for many people to afford their upgrades.
