I am a sophomore in college majoring in mass communications. I write for my school paper. Recently, I was chosen to be the News editor of the paper. I am blessed to be given this oppurtunity for the experience, and I get a scholarship. However, I don't like it. I don't like being a reporter. Every time I have to do a story I get mad because I dont enjoy this job. I want to quit but how would that make me look? And I do get a scholarship. However, next year I have to be the editor in cheif. If I dont like being the news editor, I know I will really hate being the editor of the whole paper. I don't know if I should tell them I don't want to be the editor, and then I can be able to be involved in other activities. Or should I just stick it out for the next two years, and get the scholarship? Help!!!

I went to school for TV Broadcasting with a major of Technical Journalism. It wasn't until my senior year 2nd semester that I was told that getting anywhere, you would have to start in a very low market. In that market, you would sign a contract and if you broke that contract, you'd never go anywhere. How do you like that? Needless to say, I got my degree and used it for 2 years. If you need the scholarship...treat it like another job. If you don't like what you're doing, you're in a situation where you can get out. Depending on what you plan on doing, you can still use your mass communications for a different major. If I were to go back and do it all over again........Hotel and Resort Management.....and with something like this.....the creativity of mass comm. can get you places. My advice is don't do anything you don't like doing. If you have to do it for financial purposes.....i'm sure you can get a job on the side that can cover. Good luck in college.....not many can say their college offered them the position of editor in chief. Good luck....

Let's see you are majoring in mass communications and you do not like being a reporter nor an editor. Are you majoring in the wrong field or what? If looks like to me even if you do continue and get your degree you will be miserable. If I were you, I would think about changing my major to a field that I enjoy. You cannot do your best work in a field that you hate, therefore, you are cheating both yourself and the scholarship committee. Tell them you do not want to be the editor.

It seems that you are not true to yourself. If you dont like that job, you will nt give the best for it, but you did a good job untill you were choosen the best editor. Why are you lying to yourself, when you know you can give the best attempt and beside it you will enjoy the scholarship which will be provided. For me it seems that you like the job but have fears that you will never give to the expectation of others. Come on, lets pull your socks and keep it on a roll. Hey man, it is going to be your bread winner, and remember the pen is always mightier than the sword.

Are you sure you're in the right field? If you don't want to get a job doing this stuff then get out. There are other options for paying for college. However, if this is really the direction you want to go then stick it out - it sucks, but experience is everything when you are trying to compete for jobs after college. For example, through college I had to clean fish tanks and cut up dead fish for my job but that experience led me to the totally perfect job I have now. I hated every day of scraping green crap off of the glass, but it worked out.
