I think it was because Dally felt as if it was all his fault and wanted to protect him,... And to the first person who asked how he died he was burned in a fire

He decided after seeing him die that there was no hope for himself, since it happened to such a young and innocent boy. Im not exactly sure though. But I've read and watched the move many many times.
