well I'm not sure if this is going to solve your problem, but from a young women's point of view, I could sum it up in a few possibilities:
1- your wife was expecting something else from you instead of a pair of earrings.
2- she didn't know they were real diamonds or maybe mistaken them as some cheap jewelry that are made from cz stones.
3- she's cheating on you.
4- she's way more high maintainance than you expected her to be.
If you still have the receipt of the earrings, maybe you should try to slip it in somewhere not too noticeable, yet you know that she'd be able to find it - ie, your coat's pocket, under the pillow, or fold it and leave it near the bath tub. let her sees what a huge price you've paid for those earrings and see if she'll react differently toward you. this way you can ensure that she understands how much you care about her without throwing words like "I've spend so much money on you" in her face. but in other case, sometimes women are just as stiff when it comes expressing their emotions. they don't want to look too overjoyed that the guy would think they're too materialistic. there's a good chance that she's embrasing the gift so much that it makes her giggles when she sleeps at night. try to pay attention and see if she wears the earrings often, or see if she likes to show em off to her girl friends. :)

I am not going to be your best answer on this one - I must be one of the few women on this earth that doesn't go weak at the knees for diamonds - large or small. However, realising that this is something she wanted and you saved for so long to give her then her reaction is a little curious. Some women feel 'pressured' to like diamonds so perhaps she was only 'going with the flow' on liking them but actually didn't like them as much as you thought.
Also, I wonder if there was anything going on before the birthday for you guys - as in fights/disagreements? I know that an ex tried to give me something I had always wanted not long after a big fight, but it made me feel like I was being 'bought' and he was giving it out of obligation or guilt rather than because he wanted me to have it.
This one is a hard one and the obvious answer to me would be to ask her what went on in her head when you gave the gift rather than trying to guess. It will help you to understand plus done with the right intentions, can bring you closer as you then understand her a whole lot better.

This does sound strange. You would think you would get at least a 'wow', and a big kiss!
I think you should ask her, straight out. You should be diplomatic about it, but it could be something as simple as she was having a very bad day, she was having bad PMS that day and Midol looked better at that particular moment than diamonds, perhaps she is upset about something else?
You could tell her how long you saved to get them for her, and that you really want her to be happy, and that if she does not like them you can take them back. That may be a nice way to open up some conversation with out her getting mad about it. Then, no matter what, at least she will know how long you saved and how much you wanted to do something nice for her. And that alone may get the reaction you were hoping for.

Segismund Freud the famous psychologist and neurologist founder of the psychoanalysis, that finally gave an explanation why men act as they do, once said " that he could predict more or less how men react, but :
"women ...... are a mystery"
At the end of the line they are all the same, nutty.
Just wait until she gets menopausic she´ll drive you nuts for no reason, blaming you as the culprit and thinking she is always right.

perhaps your wife does not realize just what you went through to get them for her. She may have assumed you could just get them anytime. Communication is the key to any relationship, so just tell her in a non-confrontational way that you were a bit hurt when she did not react with great enthusiasm. Tell her that it makes you feel wonderful when she compliments you on a gift.
when a couple is able to talk easily without fear of hurting/angering the other then they are going to last as a twosome. Good Luck.
