If your pipes and chimney are in good condition, make sure you use dry wood. Get is started with small wood pieces and newspaper. Roll up a newspaper and light one end. Open the damper and hold the burning newspaper inside the stove near the smoke pipe. (to warm the air a bit to get an air flow started) Light the wood pieces with the newspaper. Add more small pieces until you have a hot fire. Close down the damper a bit once it is going, but don't let the stove smoke. (oxygen is needed to prevent smoking)

The biggest thing is to make sure that the flue or chimney is working correctly. If it is then just put some seasoned wood in it and light. Most wood stoves work best when the door is kept closed after lighting except to add wood.
