In any form of writing, it is best to write down all salient points in the form of a synopsis. Don't worry about grammer or punctuation, just get the ideas down. Then go back and figure how you got from start to finish. This is your full-form, sentence length outline. If it is fiction, at this point, you write a setting desciption and your character sketches. Non-fiction, you write your source cards. Now you can begin to write. Remember, you don't have to write in order. You can start at the beginning, the end, the climax, or anywhere in between. Just keep things well labeled and in order for quick reference.

For non fiction, you need to do a lot research to get the facts straight.
For fiction--that's easy. Just pick up a pencil or sit down in front of a keyboard and have at it. Tell one lie after another. That's what fiction is--a pack of lies, but then I'm sure you've heard that lies are harder than the truth to keep track of in your mind.
Once you start writing, the characters will take on a life of their own to the point that you will lose control.
Good luck.

There is no "one way" to write a book. Some people give themselves word count goals every day, others just write. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable. Sometimes people write a quick synopsis for each chapter and then go from there. Just keep writing!
As for fiction and non-fiction books, that's a completely different question. ^^;

Whatever book you want to write, it takes a LOT of planning first. You need to "web" your ideas first, that is, you have to plan out your ideas starting from your seed idea and map it out into characters, plot points, etc. I've read that many of the most well known authors have sticky notes pasted everywhere before they even begin the first line.

Some people start with a character and as you build them up you also tell a story. Others write lots of ideas they have and kind of piece them together. I tend to write about my characters and get comfortable with them first then whack them in a story.
