intention A --- 2 + 4 x number
intention B --- 4 + 2 x number
condition -- intention A is intention B less 5.
From the last statement you have 2 things that are equal ( look for the word IS )
Therefore A = B - 5.
Now substitute with the meanings of A and B.
2 + 4 x N = (4 + 2 x N) - 5
Solve for N. Combine the constants on the right.
2 + 4xN = 2xN - 1
Subtract 2 from both sides.
4xN = 2xN - 3
Sutract 2xN from both sides.
2xN = -3
Divide both sides by 2
N = -3/2
Then check your answer
Intention A -- 2 + 4 x ( -3/2 ) = 2 + -6 = -4
Intention B -- 4 + 2 x ( -3/2 ) = 4 + -3 = 1
The mistake is 5 less than the original.
qed

testing another submission 7/2
Intention A -- 2 + 4 x ( 7/2 ) = 2 + 14 = 16
Intention B -- 4 + 2 x ( 7/2 ) = 4 + 7 = 11
With that solution, the first answer is 5 greater than the second. That could be right, too.

Now we see that the question is not perfectly clear. What does the exercise mean by "original"? Depending on the interpretation, the answer is either -3/2 or 7/2.

2+4x=5*(4+2x)
2+4x=20+10x
-18=6x
x=-3
2+4(-3)=-10
4+2(-3)=-2

which really isn't 5 times smaller. There is no solution.

4x+2=y
2x+4=z
z+5=y

4x+2 = z+5
2x+4 = z (multiply by -2 to be rid of x)

4x+2 = z+5
-4x-8 = -2z
-6 = -z + 5
z = 11

2x+4=z
2x+4=11
2x=7
x = 7/2

4x+2=y
4(7/2)+2=y
14+2=y
16=y

16-11=5 Check!

Original number = 7/2

y = 4x + 2 mistake: z = 2x + 4
y - 5 = z
y - 5 = 2x + 4
4x + 2 - 5 = 2x + 4
4x - 3 = 2x + 4
2x = 7
x = 7/2

ok, you want to take a function, y=x, and turn it into y--x+2. First, enable's make it y=-x it really is ordinary. that is a mirrored image around the x=0 axis. yet then you favor to translate it, or flow it UP by 2 contraptions. it really is a translation of +2 alongside the y axis. So, you mirror it around the x axis, and then slide it by 2 up the y axis.
