the problem i have with this question is that pretty much the only people who will answer it haven't played any of the good FFs. myself, the only two that i haven't played are III (it comes out today (tuesday nov 14, 2006)) and X2 (which i hear is quite fun, even if it's not that great an FF)

Final Fantasy IV had a solid storyline, for one thing. each person was personally affected by the enemy, and had a reason for joining your team.

your characters were set into solid classes, from which they could not change. yea, guess what, not everyone can cast cure, you'll have to find another way around that!

it involved thought. sometimes you need to actually think about where you're going, or why. the dark elf's cave? genius not letting you wear metal! how to get there? use actual clues to get there. you just found out about black chocobos... and there is a forest nearby... etc.

final fantasy IV is available on super nintendo under the name Final fantasy II, and available as part of "final fantasy chronicles" along side chrono trigger for the playstation. as well, it is on the gameboy, under the name final fantasy IV advance

as for the guy talking about gameboy final fantasies, i think he's talking about FFA (which is actually seiken densetsu) and FFL 1-2-3 (which are actually SaGa) but back then, they borrowed the final fantasy name to sell the titles. he could also have been talking about FFTA, but that is supposed to be strat, so i dunno.

The games have evolved so much, and with the generation gaps that exist between players and when they got their first taste of the series, it's very tough to say. My personal favorite is Final Fantasy VI, which was Final Fantasy III on the SNES. There were 2 main reasons for this, outside the arguments that apply to almost any FF (great soundtrack, graphics for its time, gameplay, story, etc). First, the sheer number of characters available (~20) makes for great possible combinations and tremendous replay value. Second, *the characters are unique*. In most of the recent Final Fantasy games (7-12), you can customize most characters to be able to do just about whatever any other characters are doing, be it through materia, sphere grids, licences, etc. In FF6, every character has a unique ability (or two) that nobody else has.
Now it's unfortunate to many younger gamers, or those who didn't get into FF before the PS1 era, that they never got to experience 1-6 first. For many, the older generation graphics are too simple to hold their interest, with no voice overs and CGI cutscenes. These gamers will almost unanimously tell you that Final Fantasy VII is the best, and rightfully so. It only misses beating out VI by the narrowest of margins, and would still make almost any hardcore RPG gamer's top 5 list.

I would have say that for me Final Fantasy III for SNES is a great game. The storyline is awsome and very good user interface. For PS1 I would have to go with Final Fantasy VII. Also very very good storyline. And fun gameplay.

well, i bet you could ask every person who has played fhe final fantasy series and 8 out of 10 would say FF7. it had one of the most compelling stories and the best characters. now when you include games from the gba, it doesn't really matter, they shouldn't even be considered final fantasy games. Yes they have the same name, but the style is totally off. final fantasy is an adventure rpg, not a stratigy game.
