Presentation is the key. Grilling, sandwiches, and common food probably wouldn't be taken that way. Fancy food with candles would.

Depends on you, the guy, and your relationship. My (male) partner is the main cook here, and he loves to feed people. He makes no bones about that, and I can't imagine anybody thinking he was making a move on them by inviting them over for dinner. However, he'd be inviting them to our home, whether my daughter and I were here or not, and that changes the context of things from how it might be if he were a single guy inviting another guy to a place where he lived alone. Before we got together, he lived with his kids, so that was different, too. I don't think he's ever had a place that was JUST his.
When I had my own place, I invited male friends over for dinner at times. I didn't really worry about how they took it, because I don't worry about that kind of thing. I don't make passes and couldn't imagine anybody thinking I'd do so. Did they think it meant more? Maybe. I would have had to be beaten with a clue-by-four to know it, though.
We have a male friend who does live alone and is an INCREDIBLE cook. Dinner invitations from him are highly valued enough that they aren't turned down, and I've never heard anyone speculating as to whether or not their virtue is in danger when considering an invitation :-)
So just invite the guy already!

Are you TRYING to be more than just friends? If so, candles are a way to hint. One or two meals might not be so bad, but if you're not interested in him, don't cook for him weekly or something. Buy him a recipe book. And if you have a boyfriend and cook supper for another guy...your boyfriend WILL probably think you're trying to be more than friends.

The question is, do YOU want to be more than just friends? As the other respondents said, a casual meal probably won't give him any ideas but candles, wine, romantic music and flirting will.
