Why does the 100 metres race seem to be more significant than other races?

its pure all out speed. any longer races involve some kind of strategy, holding off your full effort until near the finish. the 100m is just 100% effort for 10 seconds.

that, and its very short and easy to watch and understand whats going on . The average spectator wont sit through a 2 hour plus marathon.

It's the basic unit of pure athleticism. No equipment, no complicated rules, no teammates, just an athlete and his own body competing against others.
