Are University Lecturers (College Professors in American speak) who hold Ph.D.'s, and thus called "Doctor," a distinguished and prestigious group. If so then why are they paid so little in the UK and Ireland?

It is prestigious academically. Many lecturers also write books in their field of specialization. The pay isn't the best because today's world just doesn't seem to care as much about knowledge as other areas (like sports).

How anyone could consider being a lecturer prestigious is beyond my comprehension. Total bore is more of an accurate title and a very over paid position in the USA also. An instructor is under paid and teaches more then any lecturer can unless the lecturer is lecturing another person who is joining their field.

Lecturers aren't tenured. That's where the big bucks are.

The more published research you have is reflected in your position. Works the same here in Canada.
