Orgon, the man of the house, is oblivious to deceit and hypocrisy of Tartuffe, who is unbeknownst to him, stealing his money, and trying to cuckold him. Orgon can't believe any wrong of his friend.
In order to prove Tartuffe's evil nature, Orgon's wife hides Orgon under a table. When Tartuffe comes in again, she tries to get him to re-engage in the behaviour she has previously condemned - him trying to seduce her.
Orgon is kind of thick, it takes him ages to realise what is going on. He tries to throw Tartuffe out of his house, but he has already signed the deed over to him. Luckily the Prince intervenes (this is supposedly Moliere sucking up to Louis XIV in order to get his play past the censors).
The mousetrap is to catch Tartuffe in action, the "cheese" is Orgon's wife.

Orgon hides under a table while his wife, Elmire, gets Tartuffe to re-state his attempts to seduce her. When Elmire told Orgon what Tartuffe was up to, he didn't believe her, so she conceals him where he can't help but hear Tartuffe's villainy.
