The basic problem there is twofold:

1) Young people don't vote. They just don't. Drug users probably don't vote in about the same proportion.

2) Old people do vote and they're often afraid of anything that has to do with drugs. They think about legalizing marijuana and what comes to their mind are killers and robbers and rapists high on angel dust or crack, nevermind that marijuana has completely different effects, right?

Now, recently someone reported that marijuana seems to have some positive effects on Alzheimer's disease. If a politician was smart, he could probably have some success with promoting the legalization of medicinal marijuana research.

Unfortunately, with the current tenor of political discussion in this country, any politician who would propose even such a timid baby step in the right direction such as that would immediately be labeled as a robbing raping murderer high on crack and angel dust. You can probably guess which party might make the proposal and which AM radio windbag who would rush to apply that label, right? I think you catch my drift...

So, IMHO that's a good idea but don't hold your breath waiting for it to happen.

75% of students use pot?... you better not let the government know which school it is, remember what they did just before they took a last survey on teenage drug use?... They storm trooped their way through several schools in high profile drug raids so they could scare kids into lying on those surveys and make the false claim that teenage drug use is down... If the democrats want to win in the next election they had better at least start talking about the drug issue, especially cannabis (pot).. There are many millions of people who use it and why should we vote for anyone who wants to put us in jail or take away our right to have a job?

a candidate could say he was for it but it would have to be approved by both houses of congress to become law. all a president could do is veto it if they didn't agree.so I don't think it will happen anytime soon. still to many of the older generations in power to let it be an issue

if that were true all they would need do is include these ideas with the false promises they have already ...might check the voting in Vegas for legalized pot it looses every year but they keep voting on it anyway....just where is money incentive ?

Yah that would be interesting to see. A candidate who actually cares about the youth vote not just discredit them off the bat and assume they will not vote.

The upcoming generation is just young people experimenting with drugs. No one is going to cater to being young and experimental. Besides potheads dont care about any issues, they are too busy passing the pipe.
You are young if you go to school and you think pot cant be bad for your health. How did Bob Marley die?

I don't know. Clinton didn't inhale, and Bush forgot to exhale, seems like the president has been stoned for the last 26 years.

NOPE and here's why. Legalizing "da pot" won't bring in more votes because THE POT -HEADS DON'T VOTE!!

And you are a splendid example of the results. Every generation matures out of the drug thing. The ones that don't end up dead or in the can.
