Ram Jethmalani has stated that he was
doing it for free.
Otherwise, top criminal lawyers
charge anything between 5 to Rs.10
lacs for taking up a case and making
the first petition, again depending
upon the severity of the case.
Each appearance for arguements
has a fee tag of Rs.21000 to Rs.51000/.
Plus one has to pay clerical charges@
10% of the total deal.
Cost of typing and photocopying charges
are also to be paid extra.
Normally, all the money, at the time or
after the conference, is to be paid to the
laywers.
Plus before each hearing, the lawyer
raises his bills.
No money is refunded, if the case of the
lawyer is lost in the court.
There are lawyers, who may charge
as low as Rs.50000/- for taking up a case.
But when they need a senior lawyer,
for the final arguments, normally,
the client pays the senior lawyers' fees.
To know the fate of a criminal case,
you can have a conference with a lawyer
after his conference fees are paid, which
may not be more than Rs21000/.
And afterwards, you can take a decision.

He is a maverick among the lawyers. There is nothing wrong in a lawyer defending a criminal, however heinous the charged are. He is a profession, a spokesperson for the individual accused. I think, he is impelled by that ideal, while defending the worst accused.
