In Mesopotamian mythology, Ereshkigal ("great lady earth") was the goddess of Irkalla, the land of the dead or underworld. Sometimes her name is given as Irkalla, similar to way the name Hades was used in Greek mythology for both the underworld and its ruler.

Ereshkigal was the only one who could pass judgement and give laws in her kingdom. Her main temples were at Kutha and Sippar.

The goddess Inanna refers to Ereshkigal as her older sister in the Sumerian hymn "The Descent of Inanna" (which was also in later Babylonian myth as "The Descent of Ishtar"). Inanna/Ishtar's trip and return to the underworld is the most familiar of the myths concerning Ereshkigal.

HER SYMBOL-

An Egyptian sculpture portrays her nude, standing on a lion, and holding a lotus blossom (the symbol of life) in her right hand-.

Her name literally means great lady earth. She is Imana's older sister, she says in a Sumerian hymn.

She is also called Irkalla, which means underworld.
