It's called tenure and teachers also have to go through a performance review by their supervisors, other teachers, and students. It is still in effect to my knowledge, mostly at colleges and universities.

I have tenure and I'm very glad, except I still have to go through the same evaluation procedure as everybody else, just not as often. Since I'm in special ed. and I have a class that NOBODY else would take, I feel I have a little job security. LOL

Tenure is still used, but some states have done away with it. Check with the state you are interested in teaching in.

Tenure isn't ridiculous. A lot of jobs call it seniority. If a teacher is good at his or her job they deserve some job security.
Their jobs shouldn't be terminated on the whim of a incompetent principle or angry school board member.

It's called tenure, and it's a ridiculous practice. NOBODY should be guaranteed a job just because they've done if for a long time.
