i would recommend a Toshiba (Dell sucks). Circuit City is offering a good deal atm with the M115-S3094 for just $750. it has a Core Duo processor and will do the job you want it for.

to the answer just below by Zealnu (i'd been pretty astonished):
i don't think the price is $599.99, the rebate of $150 on the Officedepot homepage is already subtracted, so the final price is exactly the same as from Circuit City - $749.99

Although I never had a Toshiba, I bought a Dell Inspiron notebook and it was a nothing other than a horrible experience. Once a month something went wrong. First the hard drive went bad, then the keyboard, then the disk drive, then the charger. It was my first and last experience with Dell. When I called customer service, I could not understand them due to their poor English. It took forever to straighten everything out. They were a nightmare to deal with. I bought a laptop from Gateway six months ago. So far, no problems. I'd go with Toshiba. Good luck.

well Dell notebooks are quite great and they are solid, Toshibas dont really last too long, their hinges get all wobly after around 20 screen rotations. If you Want a cheap notebook, then i would go for the dell as for Toshibas start at $600. I understand your condition, school goes heavy on you and your electronic companion, I would go with the Dell. Let's see ummm there is the Dell B130, a very basic notebook , it is powerful though i have one myself, Hmmm ur a college student i see, and umm for ur budget, The Dell B130 starts at $439, i know it is hard to believe, it is 4.7 lbs. and its a basic notebook with word processing, and not too fancy just the notebook you want for the money, this notebook is a great value. I have also answered many peoples' questions with a notebook called the Emachines N10, that too is affordable, it is $548 at Wal-Mart only, and if you are often on the moove buy it because there is alot in there, Lojack if it gets stolen, a 2 gb flash drive, a Targus bookbag,

all in all, i would go for either the N10 or the B130

Toshiba definitely - Dell really burnt themselves when there were busted selling PC's even the middle of this year which were still incompatible with Vista (and not being honest about it).

Toshiba's quality of products puts Dell to shame, as does their customer and technical support (recent surveys place them on top of ALL brands in this department). The only advantage Dell has right now is that they are beginning to offer the AMD processors, whilst Toshiba is yet to do so.

You didn't give specifics on brand, but... Dells: Cheaper up front, but tend to break very often. Expect to bring it in for repairs or a good tuneup at least every year, if not more. Also options are quite expensive, but they have a lot to choose from. Toshiba: A bit more expensive then a Dell, but they last. They have great power, but options tend to be a bit limited on most models. HP: Most expensive, and you might have to go in for repair. These laptops are great for gamers though, as they have great graphics power. All in all it depends on the parts you put in it, but the choice in brand is up to you.

Dell is by far a superior computer. I have been building computers since 1995, Toshiba is cheap parts. Get a Dell but no celeron processor, must be Intel.
