if not, what will i need specificly to get started?

well o.k. what if i don`t have a modem and not to sure if i have dsl or cable. We just got a wire that runs out from the wall straight to our computer, i don`t think it`s dial up either, oh yeah, my internet service is at my store. oh yeah i reside in japan, lost and confused as to what to do.

Wifi is 'wireless access' to a high speed internet. Just get a wireless router to attach to your cable or DSL modem.

If you have DSL or cable internet all you need to get is a wireless router to hook up to your modem. But you say that you just have a wire that comes from the wall and goes to your computer. You must have some type of modem along that wire. You seem to know very little about what you have and what you want. I would try to find a local person who knows the subject and get that person to help me. You could screw up your system and spend money that won't help you.

you will need a wireless router and a wireless receiver for your computer. talk to your ISP, they may be of help.
