431+M(20.5)=M(44.5)

I think I made the equation right. what is the value of M?

Oh thanks for your help, but that just can't be the right answer. I'm horrible at math and I'm trying to solve a real problem. Let me explain. there are two mileage reimbursement programs. One pays a fixed sum (431 dollars) plus miles driven X 20.5 cents. the other pays 44.5 cents per mile. What is the number of miles I must drive to make the reimbursement equal?

You want 431+M(.205)=M(.445) - that's where you went wrong. The other folks before me answered your question correctly; it just wasn't set up right, which is why you didn't get the answer you were expecting.

Since 431 represents dollars, you need to have your other numbers be expressed in terms of dollars too. 20.5 cents is 0.205 in terms of dollars, and 44.5 cents is 0.445 in terms of dollars.

So now you can solve:

431 + .205m = .445m

Subtract .205m from both sides to get:

431 = .24m

Divide both sides by 0.24 to get:

1795.8333... = m

So, at roughly 1,796 miles the two reimbursements are equal.

Try 431 + M(.205) = M(.445)
431 = M(.205 + .445)
431 = M(.650)
431/.65 = M
663.08 = M

You original equation has 431 in dollars and 20.5 and 44.5 in cents. You needed to convert the cents to dollars ($0.205 and $0.445).

1. combine M's subtrace M(20.5) to the other side to get the equation 431=M(24)

2.divide 431 by 24 to get M alone

3.M=17.9583

does m(20.5) = m * 20.5 ?

in that case just subtract it over to the other side and solve

431 = M(44.5) - M(20.5)
431 = M(24)
431/24= M

431 + M(20.5) = M(44.5)
431= M(44.5) - M(20.5)
431 = M(44.5-20.5) = 24M
M = 431/24 = 17.958333

OK, start by getting rid of the parentheses. You really don't need them here. 431 + 20.5M = 44.5M. Now group like terms by subtracting 20.5M from each side: 431 = 24M. Now divide each side by 24: 17.95 = M.

Are you sure it wasn't 432? That would make M 18 exactly.

431+M(20.5)=M(44.5)

431+20.5M = 44.5M
-20.5M -20.5M
431 = 24 M
divide both sides by 24 you get M = 431/24 = 17.96

431 + 20.5M = 44.5M

subtract 20.5M from each side...

431 = 24M

Divide each side by 24...

431/24 = M

And there you go...
