It is the battle in witch for the first the a army of mostly ordinary people defeated a army of knights in a open battle.
It took place at the Groeningen beek near Kortrijk in 1302 the 11 of July.

Arly in the year there had been a revolted in the city's Brugge and Gent against the high taxes that the governor of France was demanding. As a punishment the governor had put a little army to getter and posted it at Brugge , this army was then slotted in a nightly operation called the "brugges mette".
Know the king of France was obliged to react and he send his army to the Flanders.

The battle that then took place at the 11 July is called the battle of the golden spurs ( slag van de gulden sporen ) because after the battle the people could recuperated a great number of spurs from the knights that where killed in the battle.

The reason that the knights lost the battle was because they where to hastily to attack because they wished to take revenge for the brugge mette and there attack was broken up by the Groeningen beek that laid across there pad of attack .

this date is latter on chosen as the festive day for the community of Flanders
