Cheetahs are bigger and faster than small gazelles, but more often than not gazelles escape a pursuing cheetah by zigzagging. Exactly why does this put the cheetah at disadvantage?

because while cheetahs are bigger and faster, they're not as agile as the gazelles are. cheetahs are fastest when they're just running in a straight line, but zigzagging slows them down. it's the same thing if you're chasing somebody, and they're zigzagging all over the place - it's going to be hard to catch up with them b/c you dont know where or when they're going to turn next.

It has to do with agility. Cheetahs often pick off the weaker and slower animals. It's like the survival of the fittest. If the cheetahs could kill every gazelle they chase, they would get lazy and probley wouldn't eat the entire carcase. This would cause the numbers of gazelle to drop making them sparse and then leading to the starvation of the cheetahs.

Cheetahs are faster in short spurts; gazelles have more staying power. Zigzagging causes the cheetah to use more energy.
