a word for aloof or awol......... someone you can never track down?

i have a word in my head, but can't quite put my finger on it.

It is for the sentence:
I am still tryiing to track down ............ principals
like principals who I keep ringing and they are never there....
they are awol, they always get away from me, i can never quite get hold of them.

I feel it's a word that SOUNDS LIKE illustrious, but that's not it.

anyway, read my mind?
