White Castle started in 1925 many years before McDonald's. Do you consider hot dogs fast food? Nathans in New York was opened in he early 1900's.

The earliest Form that I have heard of Would have to be The Earl of Sandwich. Who Came up with the Idea of the sandwich. Evidently He was a Big Time Poker Player who wouldnt have time for a Whole Meal and started putting Meat on Bread for a Quick Fix to get him though his all Night Games :-)

Mac and Dick McDonald in San Bernardino, California. They started franchising it, then Ray Kroc took over the franchising operations. He eventually bought them out and started the McDonald's Corporation. The book below has a lot of information about it (it's actually quite fascinating).

McDonalds was the first resturaunt to have 'fast food.' They discuss it in the Morgan Spurlock movie Supersize Me. Watch that movie. It'll probably help with your project, anyway, since it's all about fast food...not just the dangers of it.

it probably started at the great exposition of 1900 or so - when the guy couldn't keep up with the steak orders and started slapping ground chuck on the fryer and serving it up on toasted bread and VIOLA - a hamburger is born
