If the baby has a fever you may want to take him in sooner. But if the eyeball is not red and there is no fever and the only symptom is a goopy eye, then it is probably a clogged tear duct and they will tell you it will fix itself. My baby had this in one of her eyes too and at her 2 week visit i told the doctor that her had been full of "eye boogers" or whatever you call it and this is what i was told. My baby had no fever or redness. The doctor looked at her eye then we left and went to walmart and when i got the baby out of that car she had tears running out that eye. So just the doctor checking it out unclogged it.

As a nurse, I very much want to urge you not to try any home remedies for a newborn's eye infection. Warm compresses over the eye may help some, but be very careful of the temperature of the compresses. If there is any material (pus) coming from the eye, please tell the physician and ask to be seen tomorrow by someone. Do not use the same compress on both eyes, you could spread the infective material from one eye to the other. It may be just a plugged duct, but needs professional evaluation to be safe.

No, just wipe his eyes with a clean baby wash cloth towards his nose to clean out the eye boogers(you have to use a clean one everytime, otherwise you just spread the germs). Make sure you have a good nasal bulb. If he has thick nose congestion, add about a teaspoon of salt to 1/4 warm water & put 1-2 drops in each nostril to loosen it & then suction it back out.

If you are breastfeeding, try expressing a little milk and using it as eye drops. It works really well to clear up eye infections.

There are two things that you can do. First, take some breast milk and squirt it in his eye. I know it sounds crazy, but trust me, all of our natural antibodies offer tons of healing to eye infections. Secondly, take a warm face cloth and massage in the crack of his eye and then wipe downwards. Most newborn eye infections are caused by clogged tear ducts. By massaging with a warm cloth you loosen and help the duct to unclog.
