What is better is what works well for you and makes you feel the most comfortable and clean. There are also alternatives like menstrual cups or using a diaphragm.

Pay no attention to idiots who claim tampons are not safe or "unnatural." Women have been using fibers and sponges internally for many centuries because for most, it is more comfortable and less like wearing a diaper, produces less odor, and allows for more worry-free activity.

All you have to do to avoid any of the tampon problems those who have issues about putting anything in a vagina use as scare tactic, all you need to do is use good handwashing and change them frequently enough to avoid bacterial growth.

Tampons

Just to correct PATRICIA G F, the people pointing out the risks of tampons are not idiots, yes women have been using them a long time, but so too have women been using pads, cups and free-flow – no women ever died or suffered life-long health problems from using them, they did and continue to do so with tampons. Between immoral manufacturers, menstrual taboos and stupid women who insist tampons are safe without any basic understanding about their bodies or tampons, women continue to use tampons without question.

Pads are by far better, cloth pads especially because they are SOOOOOO soft, they are totally safe and stay in place a lot better than other pads, they also come in groovy colours and patterns – although I still prefer my Divacup, menstrual cups are by far superior to tampons or pads!

Pads are better to use. Using tampons often can cause toxic shock syndrome TSS. Take a look on the box of tampons it will tell you all about it.

It depends on the activies that you do. I prefer pads, because of the back injury tampons where ruled out by ob/gyn and all doctors. Just the idea of having to do more than slap on a pad is easier plus you have you use your hand near your privates and blood can get on it when your using a tampon.

Its more of a choice. Tampons fit inside your vagina and are good to use when swimming or doing other physical activities. Pads have adhesive strips on them that stick to your underwear. Be sure to change tampons or pads regularly. Having a period won't prevent you from doing any of the activities you normally do, and no one will be able to tell when you're having one

Tampons range from small to large, for light to heavy flow. You can place a tampon in the vagina by using a slender tube (that is packaged with the tampon) or by tucking it in with a finger. It's important to change a tampon every 4 hours. This helps prevent leakage as well as infection.
Pads range from thin and light to thick and super absorbent. They protect your clothing, with or without using a tampon. Pads are your best choice for use at night.

None of the above, menstrual cups are better than either, but if I had to choose between either pads or tampons I would choose pads any day. It is all down to personal choice but an educated woman would not use tampons due to the health risks, commercial tampons are the most harmful out of over twenty different menstrual options and the only option to have killed.

Tampons are unhygienic and dangerous because they prevent normal vaginal cleaning functions, give bacteria the perfect pores environment to multiply, leave fibres within the vagina, absorb vaginal fluids leading to vaginal splitting, and expand into the cervix causing abrasions. Commercial tampons are worse still because they are made form synthetics that cause further irritation, more vaginal splitting and encourage higher levels of bacterial growth, they also contain chemicals that interfere with normal vaginal pH so in turn with normal vaginal flora, and these chemicals could also pose significant risk to general health. There are then the environmental problems with tampons, social problems from advertising, cost of most tampons and the history and morals of the companies who manufacture tampons.

Pads when commercial are uncomfortable and can lead to infections, but still a lot safer and cleaner, cloth pads, g-style pads and padded panties are by far better because they are very comfortable, healthy and easy to use, they don't gather or feel like diapers like commercial pads can.

Menstrual cups are far better than both because they can be left in for up to 12 hours without leaking or health risk, they can be worn before your period is due, they can be worn to bed, they can be worn with sports like swimming, there is nothing showing outside, they are internal, they can be sterilised, they don't show anything on the outside, some can be worn during sex, they are cheap, they are convenient, you don't have to worry about spares, they offer money back guarantees, they are body-positive, very comfortable, manufacturers are ethical, they have no health risks associated with them what-so-ever.

Tampons are WAY more comfortable!! I hated wearing pads..I felt like I was wearing a diaper..and I was always freaked out about the smell(and yes they smell...anytime blood hits the air it lets off a distinct odor!!) I just feel more at ease with tampons. I havent developed toxic shock..and chances are I wont...because I wash my hands BEFORE and AFTER I insert a tampon..I change them every 4-6 hours...and I use the lightest absorbency to fit my needs. But what you use is completely up to you!

I think tampons are but you have to make sure you don't have them in too long...Very comfortable but easily too forget...

Pads are okay but they bend and fold and are just plain bulky at times....I use them if I'm home and really not going anywhere...

But tampons are better in my opinion!

I feel that it is a matter of preference. I for one HATE tampons. I do feel them. The only time I will use them is to go swimming.
