If you are charging a dead battery i recomend a trickle charge, the lowest setting as it will bring your battery back to its potential, it may take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on the battery amperage rating, and you do not leave it connected to the car when you are starting, as your battery will be sufficently charged. If your car fails to start after charging, take the battery to the local battery store or auto parts store for a battery test (most usually do them for free) and see the battery condition, if the battery is allright then the charging system is to be checked out afterwards. Some chargers have a jump feature but only used to jump start cars without charging the battery and allowing the car's charging system to charge it up, handy for quick emergencys, but not recomended repeatly. Most newer chargers will shut off automatically when the battery is fully charged, or are able to switch between automatic and manual, please choose automatic setting on low trickle charge.

If it's a standard charger it will take overnight. If it has a fast charge or boost setting you can try to start the car after 5 or 10 minutes. Make sure that the clamps are properly connected to the battery terminals, the gage on the charger should read about 5 or 10 amps. If there is no gage you should hear a change in the hum the charger is making.
The fastest way to start a car with a dead battery is to jump start it with another car.

If it's a small battery charger and the battery is really run down then it could take several hours to fully charge the battery. You can start the car with the charger on it.

I would like to add to Markie's answer that in most cases if the battery is not fully charged the alternator stands a very good chance of premature failure due to fact that today's alternators are designed to maintain a state of charge. If the battery is low the alternator will continuously stay on and can cause it to overheat the internal rectifier assembly. Good luck.

It all depends on how dead the battery is and if it will take a charge. Actually if you charge it up, drive it around for about 30 minutes that will also charge it up
