it means that one pole of your electric is out so only half the house will have power. when you turn on your stove you are connecting the two poles in your circuit panel ( the stove is 220v) so the other lights will go on. the problem is not in your house it is with the electric company. there could be a down line nearby call your electric company immediately

It is probably one of the potential legs that are not giving power to the lighting. If you have fuses, one of the main fuses has gone bad. If you have circuit breakers half of the main breaker may have tripped. There could be a bad connection in the power panel or a bad wire supplying power to your home.
If your problem is more then a blown fuse or tripped main breaker you should call an electrician to straighten out your problem. It could be something simple but it may be something more serious that you cannot handle yourself due to the dangers of working with live wiring

Gojets, sounds about right, you have "lost a leg" of power comming into your home, so when you turn your oven on it closes the circuit feeding power back to the Leg that has no power, call your power company and have them check incoming power, if everything is ok on their end call an Electrician you have a dead leg from your meter to your Panel and it could be a fire hazzard.

virtually impossible. you might be mistaken. turn oven breaker off. look behind oven, is there is a plug attachment or hardwired in. look for signs of heat. if your lights just work sometime then it could simply be a bad switch, or a loose grounded white wire which is extremely dangerous. there is no fault, it just heats up until ignition. is 1/2 of your house down or just kitchen lighting? seems like he would be posting with no 240v heat if he lost a leg.someone might of tapped off your oven power j box to get 120v and this connection is loose.
