I've never had one, but I've been to a few. Basically you get a bunch of your friends, and ask each friend to make a type of cookie. Have them make a lot, but the amount depends on how many people you invite. Also make sure they write down the recipe. The actual event is like any other party, except that everyone takes some of everyone elses' cookies. Have fun!

Each person in the exchange brings a designated number of dozen of their favorite cookies for each participant. So let's say there are six participants, including yourself, each person say makes 12 dozen cookies, ten dozen to give away in plates of two dozen (one plate to each of the other five participants). And each will bring back 10 dozen assorted from the exchange (one plate each from the other five particpants). Its fun from the standpoint of ending up with a wide variety of cookies, and means you don't have to go through mixing different batches yourself.
The tricky part is finding people willing to participate. Good luck.

I love this idea! Sounds fabulous. I would say that everyone in your exchange group make a different kind of cookie, and make a few dozen of them. When you get together, you would have an equal number of chocolate chip, sugar cookie, ginger bread, etc.
