they are called pointe shoes. pronounced as "point" only with the shoes can they stand on there big toe. It's impossible without. otherwise we can go no higher on tip toes than the average person. The other type of ballet shoe is usually called a ballet slipper. They are leather most of the time. Ballet shoes of either kind have one or two flat soles on the bottom. pointe shoes are used by more advanced ballet dancers because it requires more balance and is very painful even with padding. The square part at the tip of the shoe is actually a block of wood. ballet slippers are used for beginner and intermediate. pointe shoes are usually pink or a creamy white, ballet slippers are usually either pink, black, or a creamy white color. here are some pics off google.

Well, like the others said, it really depends on the dancer. IN one situation i know, she has only been dancing for two classes, and her teacher recommended en pointe to her at a try out. In other situations, like most, dancers have to wait a certain amount of years before their ankles and toes can handle it!

They are called pointe shoes. No you can not stand on your tip toes bare foot. You can break your toes doing that. I am a dancer and a dance teacher. I hope that I helped you out.

Ballet dancers use two types of shoes - pointe shoes (the square toed ones) and regual shoes. The point shoes have a squared end so that the dancers can, like you said, stand on their tip toes. The pointe shoes are a lot more expensive than the regular ones too.

I'm trying to figure out where all this 'wooden block' nonsense is coming from in the other answers. lol. It's quite wrong.

As mentioned, the shoes that help dancers stand on their tip toes are pointe shoes.

Some people can stand on their toes without the shoes, but it's really really not recommended.

You can do ballet without pointe shoes, but you cannot go en pointe without them - meaning you cannot stand on your tip toes without them. You can do demi-pointe which means you are on the ball of your foot, but not on the ends of your toes.

The shoes are what makes the dance safe. However, it is not all in the shoes. After doing pointe for a while one will strengthen their feet. Yes some can stand on their tip toes w/o the shoes, but they will not be able to do the dance on pointe w/o them.

The shoes are called pointe shoes. They have a wooden blocks in the toes. The dancer is actually standing on that block. It's very hard on the toes and no, they can't do it without pointe shoes.

The shoes are called toe shoes or pointe shoes. It takes years and years of ballet for a girl to have strong enough feet and toes to go on pointe. It puts horrible stress on the feet and makes the toes very ugly. The shoes have square toes and are sometimes stuffed with a little padding to make them easier to stand on. No, you couldn't dance the same without the shoes. Even with them, though, ouch!

they are called pointe shoes, yes it takes lots of strength and training. pointe is an advanced form of ballet that can take sometimes years of training. if u are in pointe shoes you should be able to do that stuff w/o the shoes. I think what you are talking about is a half demi pointe or a full demi pointe. Pointe shoes are very rough on your feet and can be very painful. personal experience: you need to be very dedicated and hard working and strong and you definitely have to love dance, ballet especially, and disgusting looking feet
