I would recommend going on eBay and doing a search for "sexy cocktail dress" ... Tons of photos will come up ... ("New With Tags" is designated as NWT)
Find some that YOU like, then invite your wife to come sit at the computer and look at them with you .... find something both of you like ... then GO FOR IT.
I promise, you will find top quality (and designer brands) at a fraction of the retail price. Buying on ebay will enable you to buy a more expensive dress at a much lower cost!
Otherwise, give her between $75 - $100.00 for a medium quality cocktail dress.

Clothing costs vary depending on where in the USA you live and, where you shop. Try David's Bridal, if there is one where you live. Try Wal-Mart and Target, and Fashion Bug, if any of these stores are in your city.

it depends on where you buy it. im guessing maybe one from nordstrom's, or bebe, or guess, because those are pretty good, albeit expensive, place to get good cocktail dresses.
if you plan to get dresses there, think maybe 100-300$.
if you want to go cheap, try stores like forever 21 or charlotte russe. there, im guessing about 50-100$
