is alcoholism down to bad education, tradition, escapism, genetics or plain greed?
Any views?

All of them i suppose, alcohol is another coping mechanism, some people love the way it makes them feel, others drink it to lessen their feelings; I believe because humans have been using alcohol for thousands of years, it is something that comes natural to some of us, so when we drink it we feel like we are in our element, & then years or months pass by, then we start to see our consequences, then we start to see our world fall around us etc. So we do something to change, but we never have or never will feel the same as when we were drinking in the early days.
One reason for this, I think is the sciene of alcohol & what it does to the human brain, as you probably know that with most people, alcohol sits on the the same type of receptors in the brain which releases seretonin, ( our natural feel good factor) so when its released that is what makes some of us want to drink more , to get that same good feeling,

however because it is released in unnatural ways, ie alcohol, the brain struggles to bring the seretonin back to the brain, & with each time of doing this, in time, our seretonin levels start to drop, to the point of hardley ever feeling good, a type of depression. Anyway, seretonin reuptakes can help a little with bringing back escaped seretonin.

So to not waffle on any longer, i believe we drink to make us feel better, simple. the cause ( the feel good factor) is always there regardless of who, where, what or why you are, & these reasons /answers only appear because of our innability to tell our selves that the consequences created by our drinking is our responsibility. The effect is an altogether different subject. We drink cause we love to. p.s. A.A does work for people, then after time you can move on from it, because in some cases it can be constant shaming reminder of our pasts. Which is not what we need a day at a time. growth & learning is what we need, some people know the A.A big book inside out & are still dry drunks. Oh & to that arrogent person above YOU NEVER PAYED MY TAXES, & YOUR MOST PROBABLY TYPING YOUR NONSENSE INTO A COMPUTER WHICH i helped to design. SO go & chew on that one..

I'll try to answer this in the way that it was asked.
bad education: if one does not know of the addictive qualities of alcohol how could one be responsible (of course this would lead to the conclusion that the individual has never, ever seen, read or heard about the dangers of alcohol, which in of it's self is highly unlikely).
traditions: in certain groups involve alcohol in certain rituals and events and don't normally contribute to becoming a full bore alcoholic, but it is possible, but not likely.
escapism: many use this form of drug as well as others to forget their troubles and cares of the world around them and it is the most powerful argument that you have in your question which in due course will lead to addiction, meaning the effects will keep the individual from reality, even if it for only for a short point in time.
genetics: though it may seem that genes may play a part in to alcoholic patterns it is more feasible that it is a learned condition,
such as grandfather drank heavily, then dad, then son, then daughter, it is possible that there is a gene in ones self that leans to the inclination of alcoholism, but very unlikely as the question on how the individual addresses their own life.
greed: the only response to this is that the individual is only concerned with what this individual wants and doesn't care about how any outside influences can or will effect them or those surrouding them, all this individual wants is to feed his/her's addiction.

All of the above!!!! (to your question).

I started drinking very early in life and grew up in a pub, but was not allowed to stay up past 8 o'clock, but looked older so could purchase alcohol in off-licenses from 13year onwards! May-be genetic, although my parents never drank in the week, saved it for the weekends. I am a lil greedy, but only because I don't know when I've had enough!!!!lol...Is one bottle ever enough?!?

Not sure education is at fault.....I think it's down to personnal experiences as to how you tolerate the bad things that happen to you and how you deal with them, you may need a lil drink to escape some realities of life!;o)

I am at the moment finishing off a nice bottle of red, not sure if I could start off another bottle....I know I have to get up tomorrow morning, but if I feel I have not had enough, I may even have a lil voddy n something!! That may be greed or just a lil extra something to help me sleep, but I know that without a lil something, I would lay awake, not being able to sleep without it!!

Hope my honesty helps, if not.....DOH!!!!

I believe it is mainly down to a feeling of lack in one's life. There is possibly a genetic element, but that might be down to the genetic propensity towards depression. A family history of alcohol abuse might just be down to learned behaviour where alcohol has been used as a coping mechanism. I don't think it is down to greed.

fake. Alcohol abuse will in no way bring about habit. between the main effortless misconceptions is that alcohol abuse happens whilst somebody liquids alcohol too lots. that's inaccurate. Alcohol abuse is once you have alcohol and you enable it sit down there and visit waste with out ingesting it. how are you able to get hooked on alcohol if this is only sitting there and you're actually not ingesting it? Alcohol abuse isn't any giggling depend.

There's no one reason for alcoholism - there are often many factors leading to it. I don't believe there's any genetic tendency though - my husband's parents were both alcoholics (functional, not abusive) and neither he nor his siblings have any alcoholic tendencies.

it's a disease that crosses all socioeconomic backgrounds....go to AA and read the Big Book.....you'll learn more about your disease. At least you've taken the first step, you've admitted you have a problem and that your life was out of control.....you'll always be a drunk, but you don't have to die drunk. The program works if you work it so work it YOU ARE WORTH IT!
