It is possible it came during the 1940 and 1941 seasons. The name was originally applied to the University of Chicago Maroons. They played their games at the Midway Plaisance. It was stretch of green boarding the southern end of their campus between 59th and 60th streets and running from Jackson Park and Washington Park on Chicago's South Side. The University gave up it's football program in 1939, about the time the Bears were getting good. They were given the tag, despite the fact they played at Wrigley Field on the North Side.
