Personaly from my point a view I think that marriage is "just a piece of paper" the only thing it changes is your last name. Though I've never been married, I have been in a relationship for 5 years...I think if you and your partner make the a commitment to yourselves thats the only think that shoul matter!

Marriage is not a piece of paper, the paper is the license only. Marriage is about lifetime commitment, its about fidelity, its about honoring a vow you make to a person you love.

Yes, I understand the pain, disappointment, and sadness of a failed marriage, been there and done that.

Marriage is a union that also provides, or should provide a secure and stable enviroment for raising children.

There are many ways to hold a relationship as sacred. I don't subscribe to the ideas that it must be recognized by a church or government to have value or significance. When there is deep connection, respect and honor, who is to judge the commitment based on whether or not a piece of paper has been issued?

is it neccessary for love honor all that, no. legally yes. If something happens to you your next of kin will have legally say so if no marriage make sure your next of kin isn't a jerk that will not respect your wishes and kick your parnter out of the decision making and keep them from visiting. your partner will have no say with out the piece of paper.

No, only legally, but usually the paice of paper will cause more harm than it does good...most couples should live together first, and see if it works, then get married, its really just for the churches, lawyers, and the kids to have a legal name ...not for the couples, doesnt stop cheating or keep anyone together anymore...

It's not necessary... As you said, it is just a piece of paper that the government is giving you that says you have the RIGHT to be married. If it weren't for all the tax breaks and stuff like that, I would say that it is completely unnecessary execpt for the symbolism of the "joining" of lives.

Marraige is what you want it to be. If you want marraige to be the undivding commitment it can be, or if you view it as a legally binding contract it can be that too. There is nothing that says you have to get married, a lot of people have great relationships without marraige. You have to talk to your partner and see how s/he feels and what is best for the two of you.
